THE ROSEAU SCHOOL BOARD MEETS THIS EVENING, IN THEIR ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING FOR 2019. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THEY’LL ELECT OFFICERS. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SIXTEEN YEARS, STU McFARLANE WON’T BE SITTING AT THE BOARD TABLE; HE RETIRED FROM THE POSITION IN DECEMBER, AND LEAVES A LEGACY OF FINANCIAL STABILITY.

THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD, LAST WEEK, APPROVED AN AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES PREVENTION PROGRAM PLAN. THE ROSEAU SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH LAKE OF THE WOODS COUNTY IN THAT EFFORT, WHICH IS STATE-FUNDED.

WARROAD AND HALSTAD HAVE BEEN SELECTED, BY THE NORTHWEST MINNESOTA FOUNDATION, AS GRANT RECIPIENTS FOR THEIR “COMMUNITIES THRIVE” PROGRAM. NATE DORR, AT THE FOUNDATION, SAID THE CONCEPT WAS CAPITALIZING ON THIRTY AND FORTY YEAR OLDS RE-LOCATING TO RURAL MINNESOTA. ROSEAU WAS NOT CHOSEN, FROM MORE THAN A DOZEN CANDIDATES, FOR THAT NORTHWEST MINNESOTA FOUNDATION GRANT MONEY; BUT WILL WORK WITH THE FOUNDATION IN EFFORTS TO MARKET ROSEAU COUNTY TO POTENTIAL RESIDENTS.

KRISTI KJOS WILL BE SWORN IN NEXT WEEK AS ROSEAU COUNTY’S ATTORNEY. SHE DEFEATED TWO-TERM INCUMBENT KAREN FOSS IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION. SOME EXPERTS SAY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS (AND COUNTY ATTORNEYS) ARE THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE IN THE LOCAL JUSTICE SYSTEM; BECAUSE PROSECUTORS DECIDE A PERSON’S FATE WITHIN THE SYSTEM. DAVID ROGERS IS WITH THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION IN OREGON; HE SAYS EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT OF DISTRICT ATTORNEYS RUN UN-OPPOSED.

A GRAND FORKS HERALD STORY SAYS A PETITION HAS STARTED WHICH ASKS THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO GIVE THE NORTHWEST ANGLE TO CANADA. IT’S THE ONLY PLACE IN THE U.S. (OTHER THAN ALASKA) THAT IS NORTH OF THE 49TH PARALLEL, AND IS HOME TO ABOUT 120 PEOPLE. THE PETITION WAS SUBMITTED ON A SECTION OF THE WHITE HOUSE WEBSITE, AND HAS BEEN SIGNED BY JUST LESS THAN EIGHT HUNDRED PEOPLE.
