THE POPULATION OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA HAS GROWN BY JUST OVER FIVE PERCENT SINCE 2010, BUT THAT GROWTH ISN’T STATEWIDE. WHILE HENNEPIN, RAMSEY, DAKOTA AND ANOKA COUNTIES HAVE ALL GROWN OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, COUNTIES LIKE ROSEAU HAVE LOST POPULATION. ACCORDING TO STATE DEMOGRAPHIC FIGURES, ROSEAU COUNTY IS DOWN ONE-POINT-NINE PERCENT FROM 2010 TO 2017. KITTSON COUNTY WAS DOWN SIX-POINT-SIX PERCENT; LAKE OF THE WOODS DOWN SEVEN AND A HALF PERCENT; AND KOOCHICHING COUNTY WAS DOWN BY FIVE-POINT-NINE PERCENT. PENNINGTON, POLK AND BELTRAMI COUNTIES ALL GAINED POPULATION DURING THAT PERIOD.

THE NORTHWEST MINNESOTA FOUNDATION HAS ANNOUNCED A NEW PROGRAM CALLED “COMMUNITIES THRIVE”, WHICH WILL FOCUS ON ONE OR TWO TARGETED COMMUNITIES TO HELP IDENTIFY NEEDS AND PROVIDE RESOURCES THE GOAL IS CAPITALIZING ON THE SO-CALLED “BRAIN GAIN”, IN WHICH THIRTY AND FORTY YEAR OLDS ARE MIGRATING TO RURAL MINNESOTA FOR REASONS LIKE A DESIRE FOR A SIMPLER LIFE, SAFETY AND SECURITY AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING.
